The 50% rule
If the repair costs less than 50% of a comparable new appliance and the rest of the appliance is sound, repair it. Comparable means the same size, style and features — a new 4-door InstaView refrigerator, not the cheapest top-freezer.
Typical lifespan and repair cost by appliance
| LG appliance | Typical lifespan | Most repairs cost | Usually repair when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| French-door refrigerator | 10–14 years | $180 – $520 | Under ~12 years, or a compressor under ~8–10 years |
| Front load washer | 10–12 years | $180 – $350 | Anything except a bearing on an older washer |
| Top load washer | 10–12 years | $180 – $370 | Almost always |
| WashTower | 10–12 years | $180 – $530 | Almost always — replacing both machines is expensive |
| Dryer | 12–15 years | $180 – $350 | Almost always |
| Range | 13–15 years | $180 – $520 | Almost always |
| Cooktop | 13–15 years | $180 – $510 | Unless the glass is cracked and unavailable |
| Dishwasher | 9–12 years | $180 – $370 | Under ~9 years, or any inexpensive repair |
When we recommend replacing
- A bearing failure on an older LG front loader (outer tub assembly).
- A sealed-system leak inside the foamed-in cabinet tubing combined with other problems.
- A control board that LG no longer supplies and no compatible part exists.
- Rust-through or structural damage.
We will always tell you both numbers — repair and replacement — and let you decide.
Don't forget the hidden costs of replacing
Delivery, installation, haul-away, new water line or gas connector, and sometimes cabinet changes for a different size. A $900 compressor job can be cheaper than a $2,500 refrigerator plus $300 of extras.
