Signs your LG compressor has failed
- Both the freezer and the fresh-food section are getting warm.
- You hear a click every few minutes from the back bottom of the refrigerator, then nothing — the compressor tries to start and gives up.
- The compressor runs but the freezer never gets colder than the 20s °F.
- The back of the refrigerator is silent, but the fans run and the lights work.
- The refrigerator is completely silent and warm after a power outage or storm (often the inverter board, sometimes the compressor).
Those symptoms can also come from a failed inverter (compressor control) board, a defrost problem or a refrigerant leak. That is why we never replace a compressor without testing first: we measure the compressor windings, check the inverter board's output to the compressor, and check sealed-system pressures and temperatures. Replacing a good compressor because the board failed is the most expensive mistake in LG refrigerator repair.
About the LG linear compressor
Most LG refrigerators built since the late 2000s use a linear or inverter linear compressor. Instead of a crankshaft, a piston moves back and forth on a magnetic drive, controlled by an inverter board that varies its speed. It is efficient and quiet when it works. Over the years LG linear compressors earned a reputation for failures — enough that LG extended the warranty on the compressor part on many models.
What a complete LG compressor replacement includes
- Diagnosis — winding resistance, inverter output, start attempt, sealed-system temperatures and pressures.
- Refrigerant recovery — for R-134a systems, the old refrigerant is recovered into a certified cylinder. Newer LG refrigerators use R-600a (isobutane), a flammable refrigerant that requires its own safe-handling procedure; our technicians follow it.
- Compressor change — the failed compressor is cut out and the new one installed, with matching inverter board when LG specifies it as a set.
- New filter-drier — always. Skipping the drier is the top reason re-done compressors fail.
- Brazing under nitrogen and a nitrogen pressure test to prove every joint is tight.
- Deep vacuum to remove air and moisture from the system.
- Weighed refrigerant charge — the exact amount printed on the LG rating label, measured on a scale. LG systems hold only a few ounces, so guessing is not an option.
- Run test — temperatures and power draw checked before we leave.
Most LG compressor replacements take 3 to 5 hours in your kitchen. The refrigerator reaches normal temperature in 12 to 24 hours.
LG compressor replacement cost
A complete LG compressor replacement typically costs $650 to $1,270, including the $75 service call, parts, refrigerant and labor. The price depends on the compressor model, whether LG pairs it with a new inverter board, and the refrigerant type.
| Repair | Typical total | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis only (no repair) | $75 | Service call; credited toward any repair you approve |
| Ice maker replacement (freezer or door) | $180 – $390 | Includes ice-room defrost when the door ice maker is frozen |
| Ice compartment fan / icing fan | $180 – $320 | Er IF / IF code |
| Freezer (evaporator) fan or fan-grille assembly | $180 – $360 | Er FF / FF code |
| Condenser fan motor | $180 – $330 | Er CF / CF code |
| Defrost heater, sensor or fuse | $190 – $400 | Er dH / Er dS, frost on the back wall |
| Temperature sensor (thermistor) | $180 – $260 | Er rS, Er FS and similar sensor codes |
| Water inlet valve | $180 – $320 | No water, slow fill, Er gF |
| Main control board (main PCB) | $260 – $520 | Board price varies by model |
| Inverter / compressor control board | $230 – $460 | Compressor will not start, blink codes |
| Door gasket | $180 – $370 | Per door; sweating, frost, warm fresh-food section |
| Damper / multi-duct assembly | $180 – $350 | Freezer cold, fridge warm |
| Linear or inverter compressor replacement | $650 – $1,270 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
| Refrigerant leak repair + recharge | $350 – $940 | Depends on leak location and access |
| Evaporator replacement | $550 – $1,100 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
| Condenser replacement | $500 – $990 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
Totals include parts, labor and the $75 service call. Ranges reflect a typical repair and do not include extra work caused by difficult access — for example a built-in or tightly installed appliance, removing trim, cabinetry or other appliances, or additional disassembly and reassembly of the appliance itself. The final price also depends on the supplier's current part price, which changes with market and import conditions. Your exact price is quoted in writing after diagnosis, before any work starts. 90-day labor warranty; 1-year manufacturer warranty on parts.
Is a new compressor worth it?
On an LG French-door, InstaView or side-by-side refrigerator under about 10 years old with a sound cabinet, doors and controls, yes — a compressor replacement usually costs a fraction of a comparable new refrigerator and the old one does not need to be hauled out of your kitchen. We will tell you honestly if we find other problems (for example, a leak in the foamed-in cabinet tubing) that make the repair a poor investment.

Compressor replacement questions
How much does it cost to replace a compressor on an LG refrigerator?
In Las Vegas and Henderson, a complete LG compressor replacement typically costs $650 to $1,270 including the new filter-drier, nitrogen pressure test, vacuum, weighed refrigerant charge, labor and the $75 service call.
How do I know if it is the compressor or the inverter board?
You need a meter. We check the compressor windings and the voltage the inverter board sends to the compressor during a start attempt. If the board sends power and the compressor does not run, the compressor (or its sealed system) is the problem; if the board sends nothing, the board is.
Does LG still cover linear compressors under warranty?
Many LG refrigerators carry an extended warranty on the compressor part, often up to 10 years, but labor coverage is usually much shorter. Check your LG warranty terms or the documents that came with the refrigerator.
Can you replace an LG compressor in my home?
Yes. All work is done in your kitchen. Our technicians are EPA Section 608 certified, carry recovery equipment, nitrogen, vacuum pumps and refrigerant scales, and follow the safe-handling procedure for R-600a.
How long does a replacement compressor last?
A correctly installed compressor with a new drier, clean vacuum and exact charge should last as long as an original one. Our work carries a 90-day labor warranty and the part a 1-year warranty.
