Signs of a refrigerant leak
- Cooling got worse over weeks, not overnight.
- The compressor runs almost constantly, but temperatures keep creeping up.
- Only part of the evaporator frosts — for example, a frost line on the first few inches of tubing and the rest clear.
- An oily spot on tubing, at a joint, or on the floor under the refrigerator.
- On LG models with self-diagnosis, a sealed-system code in test mode: LG lists CL as a low-side leak error and CH as a high-side leak/restriction error.
Low refrigerant is never "just a recharge." Refrigerant does not get used up — if the level is low, it leaked somewhere. Topping it off without fixing the leak wastes money and can damage the compressor.
Where LG refrigerators leak
- Evaporator — aluminum tubing behind the freezer panel can corrode or be punctured (often by someone chipping ice with a knife).
- Joints — where copper tubing meets aluminum, and at factory connections near the compressor and drier.
- Condenser — the coil under the refrigerator, exposed to dust, pets and moving the unit.
- Cabinet tubing — the hot-gas loop foamed into the cabinet walls to prevent sweating. It cannot be reached without destroying the cabinet; when it leaks we isolate (bypass) it.
How we repair it
- Confirm the leak with system temperatures and pressures.
- Locate it with an electronic leak detector, bubble solution and, when needed, a nitrogen pressure test section by section.
- Repair — braze or mechanically seal the joint, or replace the leaking component (evaporator or condenser).
- New filter-drier, nitrogen pressure test, deep vacuum.
- Weighed charge to the amount on the LG rating label (R-134a or R-600a), then a run test.
Every technician is EPA Section 608 certified, as federal law requires for anyone who opens a refrigerant circuit, and follows the safe-handling procedure for flammable R-600a used in newer LG models.
Cost
A leak repair with recharge typically costs $350 to $940, depending on where the leak is and how much of the refrigerator has to come apart. If the evaporator or condenser must be replaced, see those prices below.
| Repair | Typical total | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis only (no repair) | $75 | Service call; credited toward any repair you approve |
| Ice maker replacement (freezer or door) | $180 – $390 | Includes ice-room defrost when the door ice maker is frozen |
| Ice compartment fan / icing fan | $180 – $320 | Er IF / IF code |
| Freezer (evaporator) fan or fan-grille assembly | $180 – $360 | Er FF / FF code |
| Condenser fan motor | $180 – $330 | Er CF / CF code |
| Defrost heater, sensor or fuse | $190 – $400 | Er dH / Er dS, frost on the back wall |
| Temperature sensor (thermistor) | $180 – $260 | Er rS, Er FS and similar sensor codes |
| Water inlet valve | $180 – $320 | No water, slow fill, Er gF |
| Main control board (main PCB) | $260 – $520 | Board price varies by model |
| Inverter / compressor control board | $230 – $460 | Compressor will not start, blink codes |
| Door gasket | $180 – $370 | Per door; sweating, frost, warm fresh-food section |
| Damper / multi-duct assembly | $180 – $350 | Freezer cold, fridge warm |
| Linear or inverter compressor replacement | $650 – $1,270 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
| Refrigerant leak repair + recharge | $350 – $940 | Depends on leak location and access |
| Evaporator replacement | $550 – $1,100 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
| Condenser replacement | $500 – $990 | Sealed system: new drier, evacuation and recharge included |
Totals include parts, labor and the $75 service call. Ranges reflect a typical repair and do not include extra work caused by difficult access — for example a built-in or tightly installed appliance, removing trim, cabinetry or other appliances, or additional disassembly and reassembly of the appliance itself. The final price also depends on the supplier's current part price, which changes with market and import conditions. Your exact price is quoted in writing after diagnosis, before any work starts. 90-day labor warranty; 1-year manufacturer warranty on parts.
Refrigerant leak questions
Can you just recharge my LG refrigerator?
We do not recharge without repairing the leak. Refrigerant only escapes through a leak, so a recharge alone fails again — sometimes within weeks — and can damage the compressor.
How do I know it is a leak and not the compressor?
A leak usually shows up as slowly worsening cooling with the compressor running constantly. A failed compressor usually stops cooling suddenly and often clicks. We confirm with temperature and pressure readings before quoting.
What refrigerant does my LG refrigerator use?
It is printed on the rating label inside the fresh-food section. Newer LG refrigerators use R-600a (isobutane); many older models use R-134a.
Is a refrigerant leak dangerous?
The small charge in a household refrigerator is not a health hazard in a ventilated kitchen. R-600a is flammable, so avoid open flames near the refrigerator if you smell an unusual odor and call us.
