What the evaporator does
The evaporator is the cold coil behind the back panel of the freezer (and, on some LG models, a second coil for the fresh-food section). Refrigerant boils inside it and absorbs heat; a fan blows air across it into both compartments. Every few hours a defrost heater melts the frost off it.
When an LG evaporator needs replacing
- Refrigerant leak in the coil — common in aluminum evaporators as they age, and the most common reason for this repair.
- Puncture — usually from chipping ice off a frozen freezer with a knife or screwdriver.
- Damaged during defrost — a stuck defrost heater can overheat and damage tubing.
A heavily frosted evaporator does not usually need replacing. Ice on the coil is almost always a defrost problem (heater, sensor or control) and is fixed for $190 to $400. See frost on the back wall of the freezer.
The repair, step by step
- Confirm the leak or damage at the evaporator.
- Empty the freezer, remove shelves and the evaporator cover.
- Recover refrigerant (R-134a) or follow the R-600a safe-handling procedure.
- Replace the evaporator; transfer or replace the defrost heater and sensor.
- Braze under nitrogen, install a new filter-drier, nitrogen pressure test.
- Deep vacuum and weighed charge to the LG rating label.
- Reassemble, run test, confirm temperatures and defrost operation.
Typical time: 3 to 5 hours. Every technician is EPA Section 608 certified.

My freezer is covered in frost. Do I need a new evaporator?
Almost never. Frost or ice on the back wall usually means the defrost system failed. That repair costs much less. We check both.
Can a leaking evaporator be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes a leak at an accessible joint can be repaired. A leak in the coil itself usually means replacement, because patches on thin aluminum tubing rarely last.
