How the LG door ice maker works
On most LG French-door and InstaView refrigerators, the ice maker sits in an insulated compartment ("ice room") inside the left fresh-food door. The freezer is at the bottom, so LG pipes freezer air up through a duct in the left cabinet wall and into the door through a seal. A small ice-room fan pulls that cold air across the ice maker. A water valve fills the tray, a sensor tells the board when the ice is frozen, and a motor twists and dumps it into the bucket.
That clever design has one weak point: moisture. Warm, humid air that leaks into the ice room or the duct freezes into frost. Frost blocks the fan (you see Er IF), ice clumps in the bucket, and production stops.
LG ice maker problems and fixes
| Problem | Usual cause | Typical total |
|---|---|---|
| No ice, ice room not cold | Ice-room fan iced up or failed, duct blocked with frost | $180 – $320 |
| Er IF on display | Ice-room (icing) fan stalled by ice or failed | $180 – $320 |
| Frost / snow inside the ice compartment | Leaking ice-room door seal, duct damper, drain or fan | $180 – $390 |
| Ice maker fills but never harvests | Ice maker motor or sensor (Er IS, Er IT) | $180 – $390 |
| Tray overflows, ice block in bucket | Water valve, fill time, water pressure | $180 – $320 |
| No ice and no water | Water valve, frozen line, clogged filter | $180 – $320 |
| Dispenser jams, ice will not come out | Auger motor, clumped ice, door flap | $180 – $330 |
| Craft Ice (round) maker not working | Craft Ice motor or sensor (Er IC, Er IO) | $180 – $390 |
Fix the cause, not just the ice
Melting the frost with a hair dryer makes ice for a week — then the frost comes back. A lasting repair finds why moisture gets in: a worn ice-room door gasket, a damaged duct seal, a failed fan, a drain line, a defrost issue in the duct. We check all of them and replace what is needed. On many models we also install LG's updated parts for this problem.
Try this first
- Check that the ice maker is switched on (many LG models have an ice-on/off button or a switch on the ice maker).
- Make sure the water filter is seated and not overdue — Las Vegas hard water clogs filters fast.
- Look for an ice clump jamming the bucket auger; empty the bucket and let it thaw.
- If the ice compartment is full of frost, a full manual defrost (unit unplugged, doors open, 6–8 hours with towels down) is a temporary fix — then book a repair so it does not return.

Totals include parts, labor and the $75 service call. Ranges reflect a typical repair and do not include extra work caused by difficult access — for example a built-in or tightly installed appliance, removing trim, cabinetry or other appliances, or additional disassembly and reassembly of the appliance itself. The final price also depends on the supplier's current part price, which changes with market and import conditions. Your exact price is quoted in writing after diagnosis, before any work starts. 90-day labor warranty; 1-year manufacturer warranty on parts.
Ice maker questions
Why does my LG refrigerator keep getting ice buildup in the ice maker?
Humid air is getting into the ice compartment or its duct and freezing. The usual causes are a worn ice compartment seal, a failed ice-room fan, or a duct or drain problem. Clearing the ice without fixing the leak only helps for days or weeks.
How much does it cost to fix an LG ice maker?
Most LG ice maker repairs cost $180 to $390 in total in Las Vegas and Henderson, including the $75 service call.
How do I reset my LG ice maker?
Many LG door ice makers have a small test button on the ice maker itself (remove the bucket to see it). Press and hold it about 3 seconds to run a harvest-and-fill test. If nothing happens, the ice maker or its power supply needs service.
Can you fix LG Craft Ice makers?
Yes. We repair LG Craft Ice (round ice) makers, including motor and sensor errors such as Er IC and Er IO.
