LG dishwasher leaking — AE or E1 error

AE (E1 on some models) means water reached the base pan and lifted the leak float switch, so the LG dishwasher stopped and ran the drain pump. The water usually comes from oversudsing (wrong detergent), the door seal, a sump gasket, a loose hose or the inlet valve. Dry the base to clear the code, but find the leak first. Typical repair: $180 to $370.

Find the water

  1. Turn off power and water.
  2. Remove the toe kick (lower front panel) and look with a flashlight: water in the base pan, drips from a hose, white suds residue?
  3. Check the door: water marks at the bottom corners mean the door seal or a misloaded item spraying out.

Common sources

  • Suds. Even a squirt of hand dish soap overfills the tub with foam. LG may also show bE.
  • Door seal. Worn or misaligned gaskets drip at the corners.
  • Sump gasket. Leaks straight into the base — no visible water outside.
  • Hoses and valve. Under the dishwasher at the front-left or right.
  • Level. A tilted dishwasher can let water reach the door edge.

Clear the code

After the leak is fixed, dry the base pan with towels or a wet-dry vacuum, or tilt the dishwasher back gently so the float drops. Restore power.

When to call

AE returns, water is visible in the base with no suds, or water is reaching your floor. See LG dishwasher repair.

Questions

Why does my LG dishwasher keep running the drain pump?

When the leak float rises, LG dishwashers run the drain pump to protect your floor. That is the AE / E1 condition.
