LG freezer not freezing — causes and fixes

An LG freezer that runs warm usually has a frosted evaporator from a defrost failure, a stopped freezer fan (Er FF), a door that is not sealing, or a dirty condenser. If the freezer and fridge are both warming and the compressor clicks, the compressor, inverter board or a refrigerant leak is likely.

Most likely causes

1. Frost on the evaporator

A thick white layer of frost on the back wall of the freezer, or a back panel that is cold only in one corner, means the defrost system failed. Air cannot pass through the frozen coil, and the freezer slowly warms. Er dH may appear.

2. Freezer fan

The freezer fan pulls air across the evaporator. If it stops — because ice trapped the blade or the motor wore out — the freezer warms quickly and you may see Er FF. A fan that rattles or squeals before failing is common on LG units.

3. Door and drawer seal

On bottom-freezer and French-door LG models the freezer drawer must close fully. A bag caught on the rails, an ice tray pushed back, or a drawer slid off its track lets warm air in. Look for frost around the gasket and on packages near the front.

4. Condenser

Dust on the condenser coil and a weak condenser fan raise running temperature — most noticeable in Las Vegas summers and garages.

5. Sealed system

Both sections warm, clicking every few minutes, or cooling that faded over weeks point to the compressor, inverter board or a refrigerant leak. See compressor replacement.

Safe checks

  1. Confirm the freezer setting (0 °F) and that Ice Plus / Express Freeze is not needed for a large load of warm food.
  2. Close the drawer firmly; check the rails and the gasket for frost or gaps.
  3. Do the dollar-bill test: close the door on a bill — it should drag when you pull it out.
  4. Vacuum the condenser (unplug first).
  5. Listen for the freezer fan with the door switch pressed.

When to call

Frost on the back wall, a silent fan, an Er code that returns after a power reset, or both sections warming.

Typical costs

Defrost repair $190 – $400 · Freezer fan $180 – $360 · Door gasket $180 – $370 · Compressor $650 – $1,270. Totals include the $75 service call. Book LG refrigerator repair.

LG freezer questions

Why is my LG freezer frosting up?

Either warm air is getting in (a door or drawer not sealing) or the automatic defrost system has failed. Heavy frost on the back panel itself points to defrost; frost on food and the door edge points to the seal.

What temperature should my LG freezer be?

0 °F (−18 °C). Ice cream starts to soften around 10 °F.
