How to read and reset an LG refrigerator code
- Most LG refrigerators show the code on the temperature display — for example Er on the freezer display and IF on the refrigerator display. Some show only the code, or a series of blinking lights.
- To reset, unplug the refrigerator (or switch off its breaker) for 5 minutes, then restore power. If the code returns within hours, the fault is still there.
- Codes for fans and sensors appear only when the main board reads 0 V or 5 V on that circuit — meaning an open or shorted part or wiring, not a "maybe."
- Seeing OFF or O FF with no cooling? That is demo mode, not a failure — see below.
Fan codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Er IF | Ice compartment (icing) fan error — the board lost the fan's feedback signal | Most often ice has built up around the ice-room fan. A full defrost restores it temporarily; the lasting fix is the fan and the seal or duct letting moisture in. Call for repair. |
| Er FF | Freezer (evaporator) fan error | Usually ice around the fan from a defrost failure, sometimes a failed fan motor. Defrosting alone will not last — book a diagnosis. |
| Er CF | Condenser fan error | Check the fan behind the lower rear cover for debris. If it does not spin freely or does not run, the condenser fan motor needs replacing. |
| Er rF | Fresh-food (refrigerator) fan error | The fresh-food fan has stopped or is blocked by ice. Call for repair. |
Defrost and temperature sensor codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Er dH | Defrost heater error — the defrost sensor did not warm up in time, or the heater circuit is open (may show as rdH / fdH on dual-evaporator models) | Expect frost on the back freezer wall and warm fresh food soon. Defrost heater, sensor or fuse repair. |
| Er dS | Defrost sensor error | The sensor or its wiring is open or shorted. On many LG models the sensor comes with the heater. |
| Er rS | Refrigerator (fresh-food) sensor error | Sensor or wiring open or shorted; temperature control becomes inaccurate. Call for repair. |
| Er rS2 | Second fresh-food sensor error | Same as rS for the second sensor. |
| Er FS | Freezer sensor error | Sensor or wiring open or shorted. Call for repair. |
| Er rt | Room (ambient) temperature sensor error | Sensor near the hinge or top of cabinet open or shorted. |
| Er HS | Humidity sensor error | Sensor or wiring fault; cooling continues but control is less precise. |
| Er SS | Pantry (special drawer) sensor error | Pantry sensor or wiring fault. |
| Er CS | Convertible drawer sensor error | Sensor in the convertible drawer open or shorted. |
Ice maker and water codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Er IS | In-door ice maker icing sensor error | Sensor wiring runs through the left hinge; check for a pinched harness. Call for repair. |
| Er It | In-door ice maker error — no power, jammed with ice, or failed ice maker | Remove the bucket, clear ice and run the ice maker test button. If it does not move, the ice maker needs service. |
| Er IE | Freezer (cubed) ice maker error | Thaw a possible jam; if it persists, ice maker or wiring fault. |
| Er IU | Freezer ice maker error | Same as IE on models with an in-freezer ice maker. |
| Er Id | In-freezer ice maker icing sensor error | Sensor or wiring fault. |
| Er IH | Freezer ice maker sensor error | Sensor or wiring fault (sensor wiring often under the left hinge cover). |
| Er IC | Craft Ice (mini cube) ice maker motor error | Loose connection or failed Craft Ice motor. |
| Er IO | Craft Ice ice maker temperature sensor error | Sensor or wiring fault on the Craft Ice maker. |
| Er gF | Water flow meter error — no water flow detected | Check that the water supply valve is open and the filter is seated and not clogged. Low household pressure can also trigger it. If water is on, the flow meter or inlet valve has failed. |
| Er Ett | Water tank switch error | Tank switch or wiring fault. |
Communication and board codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Er CO | Communication error between the main board and the display | Usually wiring through the left door hinge, sometimes a board. Call for repair. |
| Er CO2 | Display board and dispenser board not communicating | Connection or board fault. |
| Er EC1 | Display / dispenser power board communication error | Check for 12 V supply to the boards; often a wiring issue in the door. |
| Er Sd | Dispenser sub-board communication error | LG notes most cases are wiring — disconnected harness, bent pins or broken wires in the door. |
| Er SC | RGB (MyColor InstaView lighting) sub-board communication error | Wiring or RGB board under the hinge cover. |
| Er Od | Wi-Fi module error | Wi-Fi module, connector or display board. Cooling is not affected. |
| Er UC | UV dispenser-sanitizing LED module error | UV module fault; cooling is not affected. |
| Er PS | Proximity sensor error | Sensor or connection fault on models with a proximity-activated display. |
| KNOB | Rotary knob error | Loose connection or failed control knob. |
Sealed-system codes (test mode)
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CL | Sealed system low-side leak error | Possible refrigerant leak (often the evaporator), compressor problem, or a door left open for a long time. Needs an EPA 608 technician — see refrigerant leak repair. |
| CH | Sealed system high-side error — leak, restriction, compressor or valve problem; on some models a bad defrost sensor | Needs sealed-system diagnosis — see compressor replacement. |
Auto door and drawer codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Er EAd | Auto door motor did not reach position in 5 seconds | Check for obstructions; hall sensor, motor or module fault. |
| Er EAS | Auto door reed switch error | Reed switch or connection fault. |
| Er EdL / Er Edr | Left / right auto drawer motor error | Hall sensor, motor or drawer module fault. |
| Er LAS / Er rAS | Left / right auto drawer reed switch error | Reed switch or connection fault. |
Not error codes
| Code | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OFF or O FF | Demo (display) mode — all cooling is off | On many models: open a fridge door and press Ice Plus 3 times while holding the Refrigerator button (button names vary by model — check your manual). The display returns to temperatures and cooling starts. |
| t oc | InstaView display (store demo) mode | Turn off the demo mode as described in your manual. |
| Sb | Sabbath mode | Hold Wi-Fi + Freezer for 3 seconds (or Freezer + Water Filter on models without Wi-Fi). |
| SF / Sr / SSt | Service compensation modes used by technicians | Exit by cycling power. |
| EbU / EFE / EFU / ErU | Factory memory codes — no errors stored | Ignore. |
| UP | ThinQ feature update available | Not a fault. Update through the LG ThinQ app. |
When to call
Any fan, defrost, sensor or communication code that comes back after a 5-minute power reset needs a technician. Fan codes on LG refrigerators are often a symptom of ice, so the repair must also fix the defrost or seal problem that made the ice. We carry LG fans, sensors, defrost heaters and ice makers on our trucks. LG refrigerator repair · $75 service call, credited toward the repair.
LG refrigerator error code questions
How do I clear an error code on my LG refrigerator?
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off the breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power. If the code was caused by a temporary condition it will not return. If it comes back, the part or wiring it points to has a real fault.
Why does my LG refrigerator say Er IF?
The ice compartment fan has stopped sending its feedback signal — usually because ice has frozen around the fan blade in the door ice room, sometimes because the fan motor has failed.
Why does my LG refrigerator display OFF?
Demo mode is on. In demo mode the lights and display work but nothing cools. Turn demo mode off using the button combination in your manual.
What does CL mean on an LG refrigerator?
LG uses CL for a sealed-system low-side leak error. It points to a possible refrigerant leak or compressor issue and needs an EPA 608 certified technician. On some washers and dishwashers CL means child lock — a different thing.
