Where is the ice?
| Where you see ice | What it usually means | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Back wall of the freezer, thick white frost | Defrost system failed | Defrost heater, sensor or fuse — $190 – $400 |
| Inside the door ice compartment, snow on the walls | Moist air leaking into the ice room or duct | Ice-room seal, fan, duct work — $180 – $390 |
| Sheet of ice on the freezer floor or under the crispers | Defrost drain frozen or blocked | Drain thaw and fix — $180 – $320 |
| Frost on food and around the door edge | Door or drawer not sealing | Gasket or alignment — $180 – $370 |
| Ice around the ice maker fill tube | Fill tube freezing or valve dribbling | Fill tube heater or valve — $180 – $320 |
Why the defrost system fails
Every few hours an LG refrigerator switches the compressor off and turns on a defrost heater under the evaporator. A defrost sensor ends the cycle when the coil warms up. If the heater is open, the sensor is out of range, or the thermal fuse has blown, the coil never clears. LG's own description of Er dH is exactly that: the defrost sensor did not reach temperature in time after defrost started.
Safe checks
- Make sure all doors and drawers close fully; check the gaskets.
- Note where the ice is (table above).
- Temporary relief: unplug, doors open, towels down, 8–24 hours. Do not chip ice with tools.
- After restarting, watch: if frost returns in days or weeks, a part has failed.
When to call
Frost that returns after a manual defrost, ice in the ice compartment that keeps coming back, or Er dH / Er dS / Er IF codes. See LG refrigerator repair.
Questions about LG ice buildup
Is ice buildup in the LG ice maker compartment a known problem?
Yes. Frost in the door ice compartment is one of the most common LG French-door refrigerator repairs. It is caused by moist air reaching the ice room through a worn seal, a duct problem or a failed fan, and it is fixable.
Can I just defrost my LG refrigerator myself?
You can, and it will work for a while. But if the defrost system or a seal has failed, the ice will return. A manual defrost is a good way to keep food cold until the repair.
