Sounds that are normal
- Water running or gurgling after the compressor stops — refrigerant flowing.
- A buzz, then water filling — the ice maker's water valve.
- Cracking or popping — plastic expanding during defrost.
- Ice dropping into the bucket.
- A soft hum that rises and falls — the inverter compressor changing speed.
Sounds that mean a problem
| Sound | Likely cause | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| Click every 3–5 minutes from the back bottom, temperatures rising | Compressor trying to start, or inverter board fault | High — food at risk |
| Loud knocking when the compressor starts or stops | Linear compressor wear or loose mounting | Medium |
| Chirp, squeal or flutter inside the freezer | Freezer fan blade hitting frost; worn motor | Medium — often a defrost issue |
| Rattle in the door ice compartment, Er IF | Ice-room fan hitting frost | Medium |
| Rattle or vibration at the back bottom | Condenser fan debris; drain pan loose | Low–medium |
About LG linear compressor clicking
LG linear compressors are quiet when healthy. A failed one often produces a repeating click or knock as the inverter board tries to start it, then shuts off. The fix depends on what failed: an inverter board costs $230 – $460; a compressor replacement costs $650 – $1,270. We test both before quoting — see LG compressor replacement.
Safe checks
- Feel the temperature: if both sections are warming, call soon.
- Open the freezer and press the door switch — listen for a fan that scrapes or chirps.
- Unplug and look at the condenser fan through the rear cover for debris.
- Make sure the refrigerator is level and not touching the wall or cabinets.
LG refrigerator noise questions
Why does my LG refrigerator click every few minutes?
If the refrigerator is also getting warm, the compressor is likely trying to start and failing, or its inverter board is not driving it. That needs a technician. If it is cooling normally, the click may be a damper or the defrost timer and is harmless.
Is it normal for an LG refrigerator to buzz?
A short buzz followed by water running is the ice maker filling — normal. A constant loud buzz from the back is not.
