LG ice maker not making ice — causes and fixes

Most LG door ice makers stop because frost builds up in the ice compartment and stalls the ice-room fan (often shown as Er IF), or because water is not reaching the ice maker (closed valve, clogged filter, frozen fill tube). Check that the ice maker is switched on, the filter is fresh and the bucket is not jammed; frost that keeps coming back needs a repair.

How LG door ice makers fail

On LG French-door and InstaView refrigerators the ice maker sits in an insulated compartment in the left door, fed by freezer air through a duct in the cabinet wall. A small fan pulls that air through. When warm, moist air leaks into the compartment or duct, it freezes — the fan stalls, the board shows Er IF, and ice production stops. That is why "my LG ice maker keeps freezing up" is the number-one LG refrigerator complaint.

Most likely causes

  1. Frost in the ice compartment — snow-like frost on the walls, ice chunks in the bucket, Er IF.
  2. No water — water dispenser also slow or dead, or a frozen fill tube at the back of the ice maker.
  3. Ice maker off — many LG models have an Ice On/Off button or a switch on the ice maker; the display may show an ice-off icon.
  4. Jammed bucket — clumped ice stops the auger.
  5. Ice maker failure — the tray never twists or the motor hums; Er It, Er IS, Er IE codes.
  6. Water valve — clicks but does not fill, or fills with a trickle.

Safe checks

  1. Make sure ice making is turned on.
  2. Replace the water filter if it is over 6 months old (sooner with Las Vegas hard water).
  3. Remove the bucket, break up clumps, and let it thaw on the counter.
  4. Run a test cycle: on many LG door ice makers, a small button on the ice maker (visible with the bucket out) starts a harvest-and-fill cycle when held for about 3 seconds.
  5. If the compartment is full of frost: unplug the refrigerator, open the ice-room door, put towels down and let it thaw 6–8 hours. A hair dryer on low, kept moving and away from plastic, speeds it up.

When to call

  • Frost returns within a few weeks after a thaw — something is letting moisture in.
  • Er IF or another ice code returns after a reset.
  • The ice maker does not move during the test.
  • No water from the dispenser either, with a new filter.

Typical costs

Ice-room fan $180 – $320 · Ice maker $180 – $390 · Seal / duct repair $180 – $390 · Water valve $180 – $320. Totals include the $75 service call. See LG ice maker repair.

LG ice maker questions

Why does my LG ice maker keep freezing up?

Humid air is reaching the ice compartment or its duct and freezing. A worn ice compartment gasket, a failed ice-room fan or a drain or duct problem are typical causes. Melting the ice only helps temporarily.

How long does it take an LG ice maker to make ice after a reset?

About 24 hours for a full bucket. The first harvest usually comes within 2–3 hours after the compartment gets cold.

Why is my LG ice maker making small or hollow cubes?

Low water flow — usually a clogged filter or low household pressure — or a failing water valve.
